PlaylistsPosted by Hippograffix Jan 11, 2015 12:52
So here it is bigger, better and more extensive than ever before... 2014 was in my eyes a supercool year with loads of good music, both releases and live gigs. As before the list is in alphabetical order and this year followed by the honorary 30 releases that for whatever reasons missed the "golden" top 20 but still were amazingly good albums. I'm sure I've forgotten quite a few or haven't had the time to really dig into some either.
Being swedish and quite modest I don't include releases I play on but I'm really happy with the albums released in 2014 I had the honor of playing on, both as a band member or as a session player, Kamchatka - The Search Goes On, Arch Enemy - War Eternal, Sivert Höyem - Endless Love.
The nerd rule is no re-issues or ep's on the list so here's a few recommendations of re-issues from 2014 which are definitely worth looking into, depending on personal taste!
Classic US HC/Punk with a serious Black Flag touch
Bl’ast! - The Expression Of Power
Fugazi - First Demo, shows what an amazing band they were even before their first album.
No introduction needed for these giants,
Miles Davis - At The Fillmore: 1970
Sun Ra & His Arkestra - In The Orbit Of Ra
John Coltrane - Offering, Live At The Temple University
The Miles & Coltrane albums haven't been released in this form before and they're fantastic of course but I'd really recommend the Sun Ra collection as it's a really great way of getting to know his huge body of work.
Jimi Hendrix - Rainbow Bridge & Cry Of Love, these are actually the the first proper CD/digital releases of these 2 fantastic albums
Queen - Live At The Rainbow '74 shows what a great raw heavy rock band they were, sometimes forgotten in the midst of the latter era string of pop hits.
Soundgarden - Echo Of Miles, killer band and a really good collection of b-sides, odds & sods.
I get kicks and learn from listening to a lot of different stuff and usually it's very rare that I'd say one album would be this years favorite, it would be genre based and along the lines of "this years favorite metal album or this years favorite blues album" etc. For once I think I can say that I actually have a favorite album regardless of genre in 2014 and that would be Fire! Orchestra - Enter, maybe 'cuz it's a live recording and I experienced one of the gigs on that tour but anyway. To me it's got most of the things I look for in music, integrity, originality, power, boldness, improv, there's so much light and shade to this album and I guess I could go on and on about this. It's not easy listening but the best stuff never was either so check it out if curious!
