2016 Top 20, Honorary 30

PlaylistsPosted by Hippograffix Jan 13, 2017 00:27

Top 20 & honorary 30,

2016 sure was a busy year with lots of shows for me. As things panned out I managed to play live with 6 bands in the end(Spiritual Beggars, Candlemass, Kamchatka, Switchblade, Avatarium & Grand Magus). It’s definitely not a goal in itself to play with this many bands but I’m very happy it worked out and that people want me to play. I was particularly honored to be asked to help Grand Magus out on their Euro Tour which was a blast!

Here’s a few releases that I was happy to be part of in 2016.

Spiritual Beggars - Sunrise To Sundown
Spiritual Beggars - Stoned Woman/Thumbsucker 7”-inch
Switchblade - 2016
Kamchatka - Devil Dance & No One That Can Tell(digital singles)
Grand Magus - Stormbringer(bonus track) on Sword Songs
Apollo - Waterdevils(2 songs)

Nuff said about this and over to the more important things in life, like general nerdery and lists! The rules are no EP’s, no re-issues and nothing I’ve been involved in but first a few EP’s and re-issues that I really dig although they’re not on the list:

Gorguts - Pleiades Dust
Possibly the best metal release for me this past year but it’s an EP so… It’s just one song, proggy and dissonant. Even though it’s very heavy there’s a lot of light and shade to this. Excellent stuff!

Viagra Boys - Consistency Of Energy
Swedish band and an obnoxious blend of kraut rock and punk attitude. Great band and I recommend seeing them live to fully experience the power of their ”street blues”!

Earthless/Harsh Toke - Acid Crusher/Mount Swan
Nice split EP and a very cool track by the fantastic instrumental band Earthless which is a little more laid back than what they normally sound like. Hopefully we get a new album in 2017 from Earthless, if so the air guitar party’s on me!

Wire - Nocturnal Korean
Songs that were saved from the last full album they did in 2015, not leftovers but songs destined for something else and apparently for this EP. They’ve always been a little overlooked to me but definitely worth looking into and a huge inspiration to many bands and artists of the 80’s & 90’s.

No Joy - Drool Sucker
Good EP by this canadian band that put out a great album in 2015. Dreamy guitar driven pop with psychedelic touches, looking forward to the next full length.

And a couple of re-issues and compilations worth checking out as well!

Soul Jazz Records presents BOOMBOX:Early independent Hip-Hop, Electro & Disco Rap 1979-1982
Well, the title gives it away…An interesting and enjoyable compilation though!

Cluster - 1971 - 1981, the first 8 albums plus live recordings from these pioneers of electronic, ambient, minimalistic pop music. A must have!

Sweet - Strung Up, proper re-issue of this double live album plus a greatest hits disc, great deal if you’d ask me. All their biggest hits on one disc and some amazing live stuff recorded in 1973 that shows the band stepping out of power pop land to give heavy rock bands like Purple, Zep & Nazareth a run for their money!

Finally the Top 20 and the honorary 30 in alphabetical order as usual. I always say it’s been an insane music year but this was packed with releases from so many classics. I listen to a lot of different genres and this is by far the hardest year end list I’ve had to put together. So many albums I didn’t even had the time to look into either and I’m pretty sure some of those would’ve been here if I only had the time to listen to them all. Here we go, enjoy!
